When people ask about marriage, astrologers first look at the 7th house — the house of partnership. But a meaningful reading never stops there.
The 7th house
The 7th house is directly opposite the ascendant, the house of the self. It represents the “other” — a spouse, business partners and close one-to-one relationships. Astrologers look at the sign on this house, any planets placed in it, and the condition of its ruling planet.
The wider picture
Several other factors add important context:
- Venus — traditionally linked with love, harmony and partnership.
- Jupiter — linked with wisdom, blessing and, traditionally, the husband in a woman’s chart.
- The Navamsa (D9) — a divisional chart closely studied for marriage and the inner quality of a relationship.
- The dasha periods — which help understand when relationship themes become more active.
Compatibility beyond the score
Many families rely on Guna Milan, the traditional matching system that produces a score out of 36. It is a useful starting point, but it is only one part of compatibility.
A fuller compatibility reading also compares the two individual charts: temperament, emotional needs, the condition of the 7th house in each chart, and the planetary periods both people are moving through. Two people with a modest score may still share real harmony; a high score does not by itself guarantee it.
What a chart cannot tell you
A chart can describe tendencies and supportive periods. It cannot replace mutual respect, honest communication and shared values — the foundations of any good marriage. Nor can it promise a specific date or outcome.
Used wisely, astrology can bring perspective, reduce anxiety and help families have calmer, clearer conversations. That is its real value in matters of the heart.
